With stints at Christie’s and Art Agency, Partners (AAP, aka the art advisory that Sotheby’s acquired earlier this year), Edward Tang has shown that, at a relatively young age, one can be a specialist in art, able to present knowledgeably about contemporary art and its dealing. The Hong Kong native and son of Sir David Tang (founder of Shanghai Tang, China Club) has made use of his many international placements and opportunities to help bring collectors and traders from all corners of the art world together: curating First Open sales in New York, co-ordinating with Art Basel and Christie’s to create Art Fair HK, and broadening the West’s understanding of Asian art while providing access for Western artists in the Asian market. With his unquestionably dapper looks and British school accent, the deceptively reserved Tang shrinks the world through new trading avenues, while expanding the inventory and takings of collectors and auction houses.
