June 29, 2017
O Thongthai has made a name for herself thanks to her unique sense of style and her namesake jewelry brand that was founded in 2014, when it showcased during London Fashion Week. The brand has since seen collaborations with Ryan Lo and Jelly Bellies, and has been spotted on the likes of Rihanna, MIA, and Bella Hadid in Love Magazine. The Central Saint Martins alumnus thanks to her outgoing personality and signature style, O has become a well known face herself. Sitting down for 2 minutes, we talk about her inspirations, “Thai Style”, and what piece of jewelry she can’t live without.
Describe your brand in three words.
O: Young. Rebellious. Precious.
If your brand was a person or multiple people, who would it be?
O: I would say my brand would be like a twisted person: you never know what’s going to happen next! A person full of curiosity and out of control. Just as normal people sometimes make mistakes, we have to learn from mistakes too.
O: ...something that is supposed to last forever.
What is cool, according to you?
O: I love Francis Bacon, I just can't get over his work. Francis’ paintings just put loads of question marks in my head. They’re dark and unique. I’m just obsessed with his work.
What are your inspirations?
O: Everything from textbooks and conversations with my friends to movies, you know. I just appreciate a lot of things every day.
What is "Thai Style"?
O: My Thaistyle and your Thaistyle is different, for sure. For me, it is just the way I see things. I want to show a bit of Bangkok, my city, and a bit of the people I admire. I want to show them what I like about Thailand, the youth culture, the rebelliousness, the nights in Bangkok.
Who/what inspires Thai Style?
O: I found them boys on Instagram. I think they are amazing so I hunted them down and we started working together. I admire them in so many ways. People think they look like a bunch of bad boys but they are actually nicer than a lot of people I have met in my life. It's actually kind of reflected back to me as well. You know people wanna see just what they wanna see. They don't know your story and sometimes they don't even care.
Favorite era in history?
O: I love watching ’90s movies and American Gangster. That’s my vibe.
If you were a piece of jewelry, what would you be?
O: The POISON SIGNET RING. It is simple but with a function.
What jewelry and accessories are you currently into?
O: I like vintage gold from Italy and Russia.
What piece of jewelry can't you live without?
O: I never take off my gold chain and I always wear a ruby ring I got from my mom. You know, one thing about jewelry is that it reminds me of my journey and I feel like the best is yet to come!
