Future-forward fashion from Blade Runner
From Rachel’s bold shoulders to Pris’ bodysuits, few films were as fashion forward as Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner, which had a profound influence on fashion since it’s release in 1982; as the sequel hits the screens, we look at SS18 looks that could be Blade Runner-inspired or easily appear in the film.

Rachael Young: The beautiful replicant that stole Deckard’s heart in the original prefers bold statement pieces that show as little skin as possible. Sultry yet innocent, she is modelled after the film noir sirens of the 1950s with her immaculate outfits. As seen below, the bold shoulders of Anthony Vaccarello’s Saint Laurent could be totally Rachael. As well as the Margiela trench coat with a cinched waist.

Pris Stanton: This rebel replicant played by Daryl Hannah was daring and totally out there: perhaps Lelu of the 5th Element was modelled on her. Her look reminds us of Helmut Lang in the 1990s, which in turn makes Shayne Oliver’s debut as Helmut Lang’s Editor-in-Residence so reminiscent of Pris. Rick Owens, whose clothes always have that idea of future embedded in its DNA, also says Pris to us.

Zhora: Remember that scene when the scantily-clad replicant runs through glass in her clear rain coat? Karl Lagerfeld’s clear raincoats. Nuff said. Worn over tweed suits but also bikinis—either works. Also John Galliano’s Martin Margiela clear trench coats.

Roy Batty: A rugged warrior, Roy gave the epic monologue, “I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die.” Roy goes from battered leather motorcycle jacket to biker pants, and probably is the most future fashion forward of them all. We think Demna’s Balenciaga and Rick Owen’s high waisted pants and transparent waist coat has Batty all over.

Rick Deckard: Then we get to Deckard, who will be making a comeback in 2049. All the designers that we love feature a bit of Deckard, the ordinary man (or replicant?), the overall good guy. Whoever thought Deckard-fashion would be in trend? For SS18 Deckard’s style is all the rage: Raf Simon’s American Calvin Klein man is very Deckard and if he decides to lose the plaid then the classical trench with loose trousers and a suite of Dries Van Noten would serve him well.

Finally, if one were to think of how Blade Runner and fashion converge then look no further than Raf Simon’s SS18 show, a tribute and homage to Blade Runner itself. Clothes ready for 2049.
