The Shanghai Art Fairs 2017

The international calendar that takes the cultural connoisseurs the world over in search of great art, design and culture makes a stop in Shanghai this month for the West Bund Art and Design Fair and Art 021 Contemporary Art Fair taking place from November 10th to 12th 2017.

November 01, 2017
Art fairs have become a phenomenon, an occasion for the world to converge on a city, although Beijing has long been the home to a booming art scene, in the last years, Shanghai has caught up in a prolific way with the proliferation of artists’ studios, art galleries and private museums. The city is also home to the annual contemporary Art Fairs: West Bund Art and Design and Art 021 Contemporary Art Fair. Art 021 is in its fifth year and is located at the Shanghai Exhibition Center, plays host to both local and international galleries.  West Bund Art and Design is in its 4th year and brings together some of the world’s leading contemporary art galleries and showcases the best of the local ones set in the West Bund Artistic Center.  The once industrial West Bund District has become Shanghai’s cultural corridor and artistic enclave with museums such as the Long Museum and Yuz Museum, galleries such as ShangArt Gallery and artists’ studios have established themselves in the district.

West Bund Art and Design comprises of not just art but also design with seventy galleries from around the world participating. A new section called TALENT will be launched this year which will present works by emerging artists in a series of solo exhibitions and specially curated group shows.  ArtReview Asia’s Xiàn Chǎng (which means “on the spot”, “at the site” in Chinese) section returns and will show works by Asian and international artists in designated public spaces both inside and outside the fair.

As with all Art Fairs, the art will take up most of the day with fair-related soirees at night but Shanghai as a city plays a marvellous host for beyond the fairs there are galleries to visit, museums to wander and some of the best restaurants to dine in and bars to drink at. The picturesque and Bund is home to many a fine dining restaurants and bars with a view (Michelin-starred Jean Georges at Three on the Bund, Three-Michelin starred Ultraviolet by Paul Pairet and Wujie (The Bund). The beautiful Former French Concession home to many charming cafes, bars, must visit boutiques and parks. Then there are the Shanghainese restaurants for local cuisine (think hairy crab, xiao long baos and Shengjianbao the other famous dumpling – Yang’s Dumplings is the first spot we go to for those fried delights),  Old Jesse and Jian Guo 328 are not glamorous but worth it for a taste of what Shanghai has to offer.  This year Pun Project’s Rau Ram also does a week-long Pop-Up just for the fairs, this will be the place to be for the art crowd.

Thus the Art Fair phenomenon is thus so much more than just a shopping trip to for the HNWI (high net worth individuals), it offers access to those who might be interested to discover contemporary art and have a chance to buy it in a fair setting (more “democratic” and accessible), it offers an experience that makes Shanghai an indispensible stop in November.
