What to Look for in Lipsticks and Men

Qualities that your lipstick and your Romeo should have in common.

January 30, 2017
For centuries, we’ve been told that lipstick is the weapon for seduction. Think Marilyn Monroe’s cabernet red lips. Think Taylor Swift’s cherry pout. Or maybe Penelope Cruz’s nude plump smackers. Ooh, sexy!

Studies have shown that women wearing red lipstick received the “most prolonged gazes” from men. Well, I don’t know what they did in those studies, but from my experience, I sure as hell have received “prolonged gazes” because of my lipstick. Unfortunately, they are not from smitten men – they are from random strangers who see that 1) My lipstick has decided to abandon my lips, leaving my lip liner unaccompanied, or 2) My teeth are covered in red stains, of which I have no knowledge.

Come to think of it, there are many uncanny similarities between lipsticks and boyfriends. If you’ve worn lipstick long enough, you know that sexy lips don’t last very long – at least not on your lips. But try getting rid of lipstick stain on your clothes: it’s like trying to erase an unpleasant memory - you just rub it in even more.

Like those bad boys you lust after, a bold lip color first makes you feel all fierce and feisty, but suddenly it’s no longer there, leaving you with nothing but a trace of shame.

The hot ones, like brightly colored lipsticks, make you constantly worried about them straying. You thought it would be on the lips, but wait a minute, why is it stuck on your teeth? It’s also leaving stains on your glass. And your shirt. And your chin. It goes everywhere, and things get messy.

Meanwhile, the ones that are good for you are just so booo-ring, like a colorless lip balm that sure feels good but makes you yearn for something sexier. You want something that makes people turn around and look at you with envy, and an Average Joe just doesn’t cut it for you. Yup, women are complicated like that.

If there’s a lesson to be learned from the quest for the best lipstick, it is to find the one that stays with you through thick and thin, and one that gives you both comfort and excitement. If you’re going to invest in something, it only makes sense to choose something that’s going to last, instead of just going AWOL after a few kisses. Go for the one that makes you feel confident with whatever you do - eat, drink, talk, kiss - knowing that it’s not going anywhere.

We’ve all read those articles about how you should consider your skin’s undertone and whatever, not exactly knowing what an undertone means. Well, scrap that. Finding the right lipstick is pretty much like finding Mr Right - you just have to give it a try. If you love it, it’s for you. If you don’t, next! I once read a quote that you should be with a guy who ruins your lipstick, not your mascara. Whoever says that has never heard of longwear lippies. With a kiss-proof lipstick (like the ones in the gallery below), you don’t have to ruin anything.

Happy Valentine’s Day, readers. May your search for Mr Right and the right lipstick be a smooth, colorful, and nourishing experience.
